About the Data

All of the numbers here come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, an ongoing survey that reaches a few million households across the country each year. People are asked about everyday things like income, rent and housing, education, jobs, commuting, language, and who lives in their community. The Census Bureau then adds those answers up into estimates for places of almost any size, from a single neighborhood to the whole nation. It’s one of the most detailed pictures we have of how communities are doing and how they change over time.
